Series background & context
The Devil of Harrowgate is a prison-set urban fantasy about a woman with no memory, no easy allies, and far too many people determined to decide what she is. The series begins with Night Hunter, when Six wakes with blood on her hands and is accused of murder.
She does not remember committing the crime. She does not remember much of anything.
Six is sent to Harrowgate Prison, a place built for people who are not expected to leave. She is an Outsider with hidden wings and instincts she cannot explain, and the prison guards have already made up their minds about her. Her one possible connection is the Horseman of Devil Falls, a feared warrior whose interest in her could mean survival or another kind of captivity.
The first book sets up the central mystery: who is Six, what happened before her arrest, and why do dangerous killers seem connected to her missing past? Dusk Stalker, Dawn Strider, and Day Breaker continue the story as Six and the Horseman face escalating threats around Harrowgate and Devil Falls.
This is the grittier side of Martinez's connected urban-fantasy world. The setting matters because the prison creates constant pressure. Six has to work around guards, inmates, supernatural politics, and the knowledge that nearly everyone sees her as a monster before she has the chance to understand herself.
The romance is tense and slow-burning. Six is drawn to the Horseman while also having strong reasons to distrust him, and their relationship develops through conflict, investigation, and repeated moments where they need each other more than either would like.
Start with Night Hunter. The series works best as one continuous story, with Six's identity and the wider danger unfolding book by book.
