It is apocalyptic, but it is also intimate.

Banks uses that contrast well. The mythic framework is large, with warrior angels, fallen beings, relics, prophecy, and a coming catastrophe hanging over everything. But the emotional work stays close to Celeste and Azrael. He is powerful, but becoming embodied and moving through the human world changes him. She is vulnerable, but learning the truth about herself changes her just as much. Their relationship is part rescue story, part spiritual test, and part romance built under impossible conditions.

The city setting matters here too. Banks grounds angelic conflict in recognizably rough, human spaces, especially Philadelphia streets and neglected corners of urban life. That gives the books more grit than a purely celestial fantasy would have. Hunger, despair, damaged faith, and class pressure are not background decoration. They are part of the moral atmosphere the series is trying to fight through.

The tone is serious, emotional, and more openly spiritual than some of Banks's other paranormal work. There is still action, heat, and danger, but there is also a strong interest in temptation, redemption, and what hope looks like when a person has already been pushed almost beyond endurance. Celeste is not a polished chosen one. She is a wounded woman being asked to stand up anyway.

So what should you expect from The Dark? A battle between Light and Dark, yes, but also a story about worth, recovery, and what it means to be seen clearly for the first time. If you like urban fantasy with angels, romance, and a heroine who has to fight both inner and outer darkness, this is Banks writing on that wavelength.
