Chloe Lancaster is haunted by a stranger made of smoke and shadows who stalks her every step. When her scarlet magic erupts and a cursed locket draws demons, she must decide whether the Prince of Hell is her savior, her doom, or both.
Series background & context
Old Magic is a smaller, darker corner of the Coven universe built around stand‑alone stories that can be read on their own. The first entry, The Rose Witch, follows Chloe Lancaster, a young woman who feels hunted even before she can say why.
She feels eyes on her in every crowd and footsteps in every alley, but the only proof she has is a locket pulsing with strange, scarlet energy. When a man made of smoke and shadows finally steps out of the dark, demons who have been circling her for years suddenly back away in fear.
Chloe does not know whether this Prince of Hell wants the locket, her power or her soul, and that uncertainty drives much of the tension. The story plays with classic paranormal‑romance questions: what would you risk for answers, how close is too close to the monster, and what happens when the thing that terrifies you is also the only shield between you and worse horrors.
Compared with the main Coven seasons, Old Magic leans more gothic and intimate. The focus stays tightly on Chloe, her escalating magical abilities and her charged relationship with the demon prince, with cameos and timeline nods that place the book firmly inside the larger saga.
This is a good stopping point if you enjoy the Coven world but want a complete, self‑contained romance with higher steam and a strong dose of moral gray. You do not need to have every prophecy memorized to enjoy Old Magic, but readers who come in already knowing Edenburg and SOMA will catch the extra layers of meaning in the background.
