Series background & context

The Contract is the series that introduced a lot of readers to Melanie Moreland's style, sharp banter, strong emotional payoff, and a hero who has a very long way to go before he deserves the woman in front of him. It starts with a simple, high-voltage setup. Richard VanRyan, nightmare boss and practiced jerk, asks his assistant Katy to pretend to be his fiancee. What follows is fake relationship romance at full strength.

The first book does not work because the premise is clever. It works because Richard is such a mess, and because Katy is strong enough to push back. Their chemistry comes wrapped in irritation, proximity, and the slow realization that the roles they are playing might be closer to the truth than either of them wants to admit.

Then the series does something useful. It stays.

Instead of ending the moment the couple gets together, Moreland keeps following Richard and Katy through the next phases of life. The Baby Clause checks in on parenthood. The Amendment pushes their marriage into harder emotional territory. The Addendum brings the past crashing forward and asks what redemption really looks like after the happy ending is already supposed to be secure.

That is the real appeal of this series. It is intimate. Even when the world around the couple expands, this remains a close-up story about the same two people learning how to love each other better over time. Readers who want one couple stretched across multiple books, with growth instead of easy repetition, usually click with it fast.

Expect humor, hurt, devotion, and a strong redemption thread. Richard is not lovable at first, and that is the point. Watching him change is the engine. Watching Katy decide what she wants, and what she will and will not accept, is what keeps the series grounded. If you want a relationship arc that keeps going after the big romantic promise, this is the place to start.
