Later, the consequences widen into something much larger, and Daisy gets pulled into conflicts that touch home, planet, and future. That expanding scope is one of the pleasures of the series. It starts with immediate survival and gradually opens into a bigger fight without losing the personal stakes that made the first book work.

The tone is brisk and a little snarky, but it is not weightless. There is humor in Daisy's voice and in the absurdity of some of the situations, yet the books still treat danger as real danger. People can be manipulated. Technology can go wrong in ugly ways. Trust is always a moving target.
