A Throne Betrayed

by Julie Kagawa

2025

In Rokugan, the Emerald Empire reels after the Emperor is murdered, and the Great Clans prepare for war. Former champion Toturi becomes a ronin and is drawn into plots, battles, and a looming supernatural threat that could swallow the realm if the clans stay divided.

Series background & context

The Clan Wars is a fantasy series set in the world of Legend of the Five Rings, co-written by Julie Kagawa and J.T. Nicholas. It takes place in Rokugan, the Emerald Empire, a realm of samurai clans where duty, honor, and politics matter as much as a sword. Each clan has its own traditions, spies, and military strength, and even small insults can turn into open conflict.

The starting point is pure instability: the Emperor is murdered, and the Great Clans begin to move like sharks. Alliances shift, old rivalries flare, and everyone has a different idea of what “saving the Empire” looks like, especially when a vacant throne is part of the problem. Decisions are made in war rooms and tea rooms, and the people who smile the most may be the ones holding the sharpest knives.

At the center is Toturi, once the Emperor’s Champion, now a ronin with no clan to protect him and no banner to hide behind. That outsider status makes him dangerous and useful at the same time. He can walk into places a clan general can’t, and he can also become the perfect scapegoat when politics demand a sacrifice. Toturi’s path forces him to question what loyalty means when the institution you served turns on itself, and it gives readers a grounded point of view as the wider conflict grows.

War isn’t the only threat.

As the clans turn their blades on each other, a darker, inhuman enemy gathers on the edges, ready to take advantage of division and fear. The tension in this series comes from that double pressure: the immediate, human problem of power and betrayal, and the looming sense that if the clans don’t unite, there may not be an Empire left to fight over.

Expect a mix of battlefield action and court intrigue, with plenty of focus on choices that carry moral weight. Characters have to decide when honor is a shield and when it’s a trap, and the cost of doing the “right” thing can be brutally high in a society built on reputation. There’s also a sense of the supernatural in the background, with omens, strange forces, and the possibility that the next battle might not be against human opponents at all.

If you’re new to this world, start with A Throne Betrayed. It introduces the major players and the stakes of the conflict, and it sets the tone for a story that treats politics as another kind of combat.
