The Circuit Rider Books in Order

The Circuit Rider books focus on Mike Tower, a traveling preacher moving through rough country with a past he does not talk about much. In older American history, a circuit rider was a minister who moved from town to town, and Ames uses that idea well. Tower brings faith into places that are short on peace and long on danger.

What makes the series work is that Tower is not traveling through gentle country. He is usually paired with Bird Hitchcock, who knows guns, booze, fear, and frontier reality much better than sermons. Together they make an odd and effective western partnership. Tower offers conscience. Bird offers survival. The jobs they stumble into quickly turn toward murder, kidnapping, vengeance, and people with no interest in being saved.

If the Bird Hitchcock page is where you go for the gunfighter angle, this page is where you go for the moral tension underneath it. The western action is still there, but so are questions about guilt, mercy, and whether a person can really outrun an older life. It is one of Ames's more distinctive western setups.
