The Castaways opens on a beach, but not a peaceful one. A man wakes hurt, wet, and alone after being struck from behind during a sea journey. Something is moving beyond the tree line, the world is still dim under lingering ash, and almost everything he thought his trip would be has already fallen apart.

It is one of Foxworthy's darker openings.

The setting is the South Pacific after a cataclysm, with survivors trying to build lives among damaged islands, long voyages, and badly frayed social rules. The series begins with a trip out from Tahiti and quickly narrows to immediate survival, who is still alive, who can be protected, and what kind of threat the island itself is hiding. The post-disaster backdrop matters here. Travel is hard, communication is limited, and isolation changes people.

What links the book together is not just danger, but recovery. The protagonist has to get his bearings, figure out who betrayed him, and decide what responsibility he carries for the other vulnerable people drawn into the wreckage around him. The emotional pressure is as important as the physical one.
