Series background & context

The Bonds series is Kimberley Chambers' newer saga about a ruthless Essex crime dynasty. Introduced in The Family Man and expanded in The Brothers and Essex Wives, the books follow the fortunes of Kenny Bond and his descendants as they battle rivals, the law and each other from their base around Dark Lane.

In The Family Man, Kenny is freshly out of prison after serving a long stretch for killing a policeman. Older and apparently wiser, he wants to keep his head down while still protecting his own. His son Donny lacks Kenny's brutal edge, but Donny's twin boys, Beau and Brett, are Bonds through and through: fiercely loyal to each other, ambitious and unafraid of trouble. When a new family moves onto Dark Lane and old grudges resurface, Kenny must choose between the peaceful life he claims to want and the violent instincts that once made his name.

The Brothers pushes the next generation centre stage. Beau is the fiery twin, protective to the point of obsession over both Brett and his fiancée Jolene. Brett, the quieter brother, has spent years following Beau's lead, sometimes to his cost. As wedding plans bring their feuding in‑laws together, the brothers are sitting on a secret so explosive it could spark open war between the families. The novel combines the claustrophobia of a family drama with the looming threat of gangland retribution, all building toward the moment when that secret can no longer be contained.

Set in 1999, Essex Wives shifts the spotlight to the women whose lives have been scorched by the Bond men. Sharon wants payback for her husband's affair. Jolene is no longer just the girl on Beau's arm; she has her own score to settle. Evie is determined to protect her daughter from the charming but dangerous bad boy she married into. As New Year's Eve and the millennium approach, the three women realise they are strongest together, and that revenge might be the only language the Bonds truly understand.

Where the Mitchells & O'Haras dig into East End loyalties and the Butlers rule inner‑city streets, the Bonds extend Chambers' trademark mix of grit, humour and high drama into late‑1990s and 2000s Essex. The series blends flashy cars and cul‑de‑sacs with the same brutal codes of honour, making it an ideal next step for readers who have devoured her earlier family sagas and want to see how a new generation of villains—and the people who love them—adapt to changing times.
