The setting matters. Erthia is not just a generic map with magic laid on top. Different peoples, including mages, fae, and other races, carry their own histories, prejudices, and political stakes, and Forest keeps bringing those tensions back to the page. Verpax University gives the early books a school-story shape, but forests, military camps, borderlands, and contested territories become more important as the war spreads.

The prequel novels deepen that history. Wandfasted follows Tessla Harrow during the earlier Realm War and brings Vale Gardner into focus. Light Mage centers on Sagellyn Gaffney and the Wand of Myth, long before Elloren becomes tied to it. If you read them before the main novels, they add extra weight. If you read them later, they work like backstory that suddenly makes the wider conflict feel more personal. The Rebel Mages collects both prequels in one volume.

In tone, this is a big, high-stakes fantasy series with romance, found family, magical creatures, battle lines, and a strong interest in how fear gets taught and reinforced. It is not cozy, and it is not small in scope. Readers who enjoy long arcs, layered friendships, and stories where a school setting opens into something far more dangerous will probably feel at home here.
