Beloved

2014

After another betrayal, Catherine swears off men and tries to keep things strictly professional with Jackson Cole, a former SEAL who makes that impossible. Their attraction is instant, but both carry wounds that make trust hard.

Series background & context

The Belonging Duet is where the Salvation world begins, and it starts with two people who are attracted to each other almost immediately but are nowhere near ready for the kind of trust real love requires. Catherine and Jackson get both books to work through that problem, which gives the story room to be messy, emotional, and very character driven.

Catherine enters the duet already bruised by life. She has been let down by men before, and that history shapes the way she moves through the world. Jackson is a former SEAL and the kind of man who looks completely in control until you spend enough time around him to see the damage underneath. Their connection begins in a professional setting, but it does not stay professional for long.

The chemistry is never the issue.

What the duet is really about is fear. In Beloved, Michaels sets up the attraction, the emotional pull, and the sense that both of them want something they do not fully know how to hold. In Beholden, she pushes harder on the insecurities, past pain, and consequences that come from trying to protect yourself while also asking for love. The two-book structure helps because these are not people who can simply talk once and be fixed.

The Salvation background is lighter here than in later books, but the seeds are planted. Jackson's world, his brothers-in-arms, and the larger emotional universe around him are already present. That helps the duet feel like the first chapter in something bigger while still staying tightly focused on Catherine and Jackson.

If you want to see Michaels building the kind of romance she became known for, this duet is a good place to start. It has the intensity, sexual tension, emotional damage, and insistence on hard-won healing that define a lot of her work. It is less about external danger than some later books and more about what it takes for two guarded people to believe they really belong with each other.
