Their arrangement starts as damage control, with room for Harriet to keep her work and Alexander to keep living as he always has. The tension comes from watching two people who understand attraction very well, and honesty much less well, learn what intimacy actually asks of them. Ballrooms, drawing rooms, gossip, land deals, and private bargains all help keep the pressure on, and the book gets a lot of fun out of the gap between public respectability and private desire.

The tone is lively, sexy, and funny, but the family thread is what makes the series feel sturdy. These sisters are all negotiating the same world of gossip, marriage prospects, money trouble, and male authority, but each comes at it differently. Even in the first book, the other sisters feel like more than side characters.
