The Amish of Cedar Grove is a compact three-book series that feels a little more reflective than some of Patricia Davids's longer Amish runs. The books, The Wish, The Hope, and The Promise, all take place in the same small community, and each one centers on people who are carrying some unfinished hurt into a new season of life. That gives the series a linked, lived-in feeling without turning it into one long cliffhanger.

It is a small-town series in the best sense.

Cedar Grove is the kind of place where creeks flood, farms matter, and everybody has a memory attached to everybody else. The characters are not strangers colliding out of nowhere. They are widows, old sweethearts, returning family friends, and neighbors who already know the shape of each other's pasts. That history gives even the gentlest scenes a little extra pull.

Davids uses that setting to tell second-chance stories that feel grounded rather than flashy. In The Wish, a widow's quiet life changes when she saves an injured outsider and his baby. In The Hope, an old wound is reopened when a man from the past returns and a lost child creates a mystery that pulls people together. In The Promise, a pretend courtship starts as a practical plan and ends up stirring feelings no one had managed honestly.

What links the books most clearly is tone. These are stories about loneliness softening into trust. They are about people who think their future has narrowed, then find it opening again in ways they did not expect. The faith element is present, but it works best through the characters' choices, patience, and willingness to keep showing up for one another.

You can read each book on its own, but the trilogy works especially well in order because families and friendships carry forward. If you want Patricia Davids at her most tender and community-focused, with a little weather, a little misdirection, and a lot of emotional repair, Cedar Grove is a lovely place to begin.
