Series background & context

In The Amateurs trilogy, Sara Shepard takes her love of twisty mysteries into the world of online true crime fans. Seneca Frazier is a smart, lonely college student who spends most of her free time on Case Not Closed, a message board devoted to unsolved cases.

The disappearance and presumed murder of glamorous teen Helena Kelly is the case that first pulled Seneca in. When another user invites her to spend spring break in the wealthy town of Dexby, Connecticut, and investigate the cold trail in person, Seneca jumps at the chance to turn her armchair sleuthing into something real.

On the ground she teams up with fellow posters Maddox, Madison and Helena's guarded sister Aerin. Their hunt for clues moves through mansions, prep schools and gated communities where everyone seems to know more than they are saying. Each chapter peels back another layer of privilege, resentment and buried trauma around the Kelly family.

The second book, Follow Me, shifts the action to the Jersey Shore, where a young social media star vanishes after a party. The missing girl's uncanny resemblance to Helena, and the way the new crime echoes the old one, make the group suspect that their original killer is still active and playing a long game.

In the finale, Last Seen, the stakes become personal when Aerin is kidnapped by the same mastermind and the friends are blackmailed into solving another child abduction on a strict deadline. The trilogy leans into scavenger hunt style puzzles, shifting alliances and the question of why ordinary teens would risk so much to solve crimes the police have already closed.

Across all three books, Shepard keeps the pace quick and the chapters short, while also giving space to Seneca's grief, family history and tentative romances. The result feels like a bridge between the heightened drama of Pretty Little Liars and the moodier tone of contemporary true crime, with a tight arc that rewards reading the series in order.
