The Agricultural Lord Palfrey Books in Order

The Agricultural Lord Palfrey follows Nathaniel Perry, a soldier who survives Waterloo and returns to a country where peace creates its own problems. He has some distinction and a promotion, but no private income, which makes fashionable military respect a thin comfort.

Then a dying grandfather changes everything.

Nathaniel learns that he is heir to a merchant fortune, and soon after finds himself connected again to the paternal side that had rejected his father’s marriage. He becomes Lord Palfrey, rich and titled, but not fully accepted by either the world of trade or the world of landed rank. That in-between position is the heart of the series.

The books take place in the tense years after the Napoleonic Wars. Veterans come home, wages fall, the Corn Laws raise the price of wheat, landowners enjoy short-lived power, and many people fear revolution. Nathaniel wants to enrich and protect his family, but he also understands that land alone may not be safe. Industry, trade, railways, ships, and the North Country all begin to matter.

Wareham is good on money, and this series gives him plenty of it to handle. Estates need investment. Tenants resist change. Agricultural wealth looks solid until it is not. Nathaniel’s title gives him position, but the land itself must be made to work.
