Series background & context

The Age of Uprising is an epic fantasy series set in Torwyn, a nation whose power comes from industry. Its machines run on pyrestone, a magical resource, and the Guilds control the work, wealth, and systems that keep the empire moving. That makes this a fantasy world of furnaces, mines, artificers, political deals, and armies, rather than a simple kingdom of castles and quests.

At the center is the Hawkspur family, one of Torwyn's most important guild families. Rosomon Hawkspur is determined to protect both her family and the place they hold in the nation, so she sends her heirs into different corners of the empire. It is a sensible plan on paper. In practice, each journey reveals another part of a country heading toward crisis.

Conall, the eldest, is sent to the frontier to prove himself in the military, where the first signs of rebellion are impossible to ignore. Tyreta can channel pyrestone and is sent to investigate how it is harvested, only to find the human cost buried beneath Torwyn's industrial success. Fulren is a gifted artificer who becomes caught up in foreign intrigue after being framed for a crime with the potential to start a war.

The family is spread out, and that is the point. Their separate stories let the series show how trouble in a mine, a military outpost, or a political meeting can all be part of the same larger struggle. The Guilds are powerful, but they are not united. The Draconate Ministry wants control. Ordinary people have reasons to resent the system. Before long, a dispute over power becomes a fight over what kind of country Torwyn will be.

Magic is useful here, but it is never separate from politics or labor.

The tone is big, tense, and action-focused, with multiple viewpoints and a growing sense that every faction is making plans. Ford balances large events with family pressure, personal loyalties, and characters who have to decide what they are willing to sacrifice. Battles matter, but so do betrayals, hidden evidence, and the awful things people learn when they look too closely at how an empire works.

Start with Engines of Empire. It introduces Torwyn, the Hawkspurs, pyrestone, and the tensions that drive the whole series. From there, the conflict widens into a story of revolution, war, and a family trying to hold together while the country around them starts to break apart.
