Series background & context
The Accidental Medium starts with a great hook. Paige Provey is forty-three, successful, and known for writing paranormal books, except her public image falls apart when her ex-husband exposes her as a fraud. She heads to Willow Lake hoping to fix her writer's block and save her career, and instead stumbles into a town where ghosts, magic, and local secrets are all a little too real.
Paige is not a born sleuth in the usual cozy way.
She is a woman in mid-career freefall, trying to get her footing while the supernatural keeps shoving her forward. That gives the series a nice mix of humor, panic, and second-chance energy. Paige is smart, sarcastic, and not thrilled to discover that the weird things around her are not just material for fiction anymore.
A big part of the appeal is her partnership with monster hunter Grim. He brings a darker edge to the world, while Paige keeps the books grounded in personality and voice. Around them are missing magical objects, family trouble, ghostly hangers-on, and mysteries that tie into the town's hidden past.
The trilogy also carries a stronger ongoing arc than some cozies. Paige is not just solving one case after another. She is trying to rebuild her name, understand her powers, work out what happened to Snow, and decide who she can actually trust.
If you like paranormal mysteries with an older heroine, a little romantic tension, and a world that keeps getting stranger in interesting ways, this series is a good place to start.
