The Texas Badge Mysteries sit in a nice middle ground between western and detective story. The setting is still horse country, small towns, and hard men with guns, but the engine of the books is investigation. Sheriff Dell Hoffman is not only chasing outlaws. He is trying to make sense of crimes that leave behind too few witnesses and too many ugly possibilities.

That gives the series a different rhythm from Richards's ranch sagas. In The Texas Badge, Dell is dealing with a bank robbery, jailbreak, and massacre that land all at once. He has to work clues, question people on the edges of town, and figure out who is hiding what. Later books keep that same structure while widening the trouble. Arson, kidnappings, feuds, and bigger conspiracies all push Dell into cases that feel both personal and public.

Rose Parsons becomes an important part of that later energy. She brings a rougher, more impatient streak to the stories, which helps keep the series from feeling too settled. When she and Dell work together, the books have a lively lawman-partner feel, even though they still belong firmly to the western tradition.

The series also makes strong use of place. These are Texas stories, and not just because the word is in the titles. The plains, the distances, the heat, and the fragility of order in small communities all matter. Fire can threaten a whole town. A kidnapping can turn into a county-wide panic. One bad man with a grudge can do a lot of damage before anybody gets close enough to stop him.

If you like westerns but want a little more clue-chasing, suspicion, and slow-unfolding truth in the mix, this is a strong fit. Read them in order, because Dell's world and his relationships deepen from book to book, but each mystery still delivers its own central case.
