Author bio
Terri L Austin wrote books that liked to move. Whether she was following a waitress with a talent for stumbling into crime, a sharp-tongued British tycoon, or a woman who could shut down magic just by standing nearby, her stories leaned on pace, banter, and strong romantic tension.
She once said she thought she'd outgrow imaginary friends and made-up stories. She didn't. That habit stayed with her, and it eventually turned into a writing career that crossed humorous mystery, contemporary romance, and paranormal suspense.
Her published fiction started with Diners, Dives & Dead Ends in 2012. That debut introduced Rose Strickland, a waitress and part-time college student whose life at Ma's Diner keeps colliding with much bigger trouble. Rose has moneyed parents, a stubborn streak, and a gift for getting involved when she really should walk away. Austin kept building that world in Last Diner Standing, Diner Impossible, and Diner Knock Out, adding missing friends, murder cases, class tension, and a colorful circle of allies and bad choices.
She liked heroines with backbone.
Austin also wrote a linked contemporary romance series built around the Campbell sisters and a lineup of wealthy British men. In His Every Need, Allie Campbell tries to save her family home from Trevor Blake, the tycoon holding all the cards. The companion novella To Be His revisits that story from Trevor's point of view. Later books, including His Kind of Trouble and His to Keep, stay in the same family orbit, following Monica and Brynn as they get tangled up with men who are polished on the outside and much messier underneath.
British heroes were not a random choice. In an author's note for To Be His, Austin said she grew up reading romance novels with British leads, and that Trevor Blake simply would not leave her alone until she told his story. That affection shows up all through the Beauty and the Brit books, which mix heat, dry humor, and family drama without losing their sense of fun.
Then she took a turn into the supernatural.
The A Null for Hire novels, Dispelled and Disheartened, follow Holly James, a woman whose power works by wiping out other people's magic. Austin uses that setup to fold witches, shifters, cursed objects, and murder investigations into a fast urban-fantasy framework. Holly's work, her connection to Council Inspector Cade McAllister, and the long question of what happened to her missing mother give the series both momentum and heart.
Taken together, Austin's books show a writer who enjoyed range but kept returning to a few favorite things. She liked women who were underestimated. She liked men who needed to be rattled. And she liked plots that could be funny one moment and genuinely tense the next. Across all three series, the through line is easy to spot: quick pace, strong chemistry, found-family energy, and characters who keep talking their way into bigger problems.
Public author bios placed her in Missouri with her husband and family. More than anything, her work feels built by someone who wanted readers to have a good time, with plenty of trouble, a little chaos, and people worth rooting for.
