Author bio
Teresa Burrell has spent much of her working life standing up for children. Before she was known for legal suspense novels, she was a teacher, then an attorney in juvenile court. That path matters, because her fiction grows out of the same questions that shaped her day jobs: who protects kids when the adults around them fail, and what does justice look like when the truth is messy?
She was born in Minnesota and spent her first five years on a farm with eight siblings. For the next stretch of childhood, her family split time between the Midwest and California, heading west to escape the worst of the winters before eventually settling for good in Southern California, where she finished high school and college.
Teaching came first.
After earning her teaching credential, Burrell spent about twelve years in the classroom, working with children of different ages, backgrounds, and needs. She also created an after-school program meant to keep kids off the street, work that earned her a community service award. Long before she wrote courtroom scenes, she was already paying attention to how children talk, what they notice, and how much they carry.
Then she made a big turn and went to law school at the University of San Diego. She earned her Juris Doctor and spent another twelve years in private practice in San Diego, handling domestic, criminal, and civil matters. In juvenile court, her focus was representing abused minors and juvenile offenders, and she was recognized for many hours of pro bono work with children and their families.
That work changed her writing.
Readers usually meet her through The Advocate series, which follows child advocate attorney Sabre Orin Brown. The books blend courtroom pressure, family trouble, missing people, and murder cases, but what keeps many readers coming back is the balance between suspense and heart. Sabre is sharp and stubborn, her investigator JP Torn is a steady favorite, and the cases are rooted in problems that feel real because Burrell knew that world from the inside.
She has also widened that fictional world in fun ways. The Tuper books, starting with Mason's Missing, shift the action toward Montana and pair an old cowboy with a gifted hacker named Lana. Her collaboration with L.J. Sellers, No Consent, leans into a grittier crime-thriller setup. And with Gaspar, the Flatulating Ghost, she moved into children's books, using a goofy little ghost to talk about loneliness, bullying, and kindness without getting preachy.
Her books often come back to the same pressure points: children in danger, damaged families, people hiding the truth, and ordinary loyalty tested by fear. Even when the plots twist hard, there is usually a practical, humane center to them. She writes like someone who has seen how institutions work, and also how often they fall short.
Now in semi-retirement in California, Burrell continues to write and speak to groups about social issues that affect children. Several of her books have won reader awards, and The Advocate's Felony picked up a mystery award in San Diego, but the bigger story is simpler than that. She built a second career by turning years in the classroom and courtroom into stories that move fast, care about people, and never lose sight of the kids at the center.
