Nate is used to easy charm and short term attention. Kalani is not impressed, at least not openly, and that is where their story lives. Defenseless Hearts shifts the focus to Parker and Kendra, two characters readers meet in the first book. Their history is messier and more tangled. Kendra keeps walking back to someone else, and Parker keeps letting her, even though every return leaves him a little more wrecked. The story opens with her on his doorstep after months of silence and follows the pair as they try to figure out whether they can break patterns that have always ended with her choosing another man.
