Taylor Brown Books in Order

Taylor Brown was born in Brunswick, Georgia, in 1982 and grew up on the Georgia coast. As a child, he underwent surgeries for club feet, and books became an important escape. He was also a natural storyteller, filling the house with made-up tales long before writing became his job.

At the University of Georgia, Brown studied English and fell hard for writers such as Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, and Virginia Woolf. He initially imagined an academic future, but began writing fiction seriously during his final year of college.

That choice stuck.

After graduating in 2005, Brown sold his car and moved to Buenos Aires, where he taught English and kept writing. Later stints in San Francisco and western North Carolina gave him more roads, landscapes, and working lives to draw from. His first short stories began appearing in print in 2008, and his story “Rider” won the Montana Prize in Fiction the following year.

His first book, the story collection In the Season of Blood and Gold, arrived in 2014. Its title story eventually became the opening chapter of Fallen Land, his 2016 debut novel. Set in the last year of the Civil War, that book follows two young people trying to survive a collapsing South, and it established Brown’s interest in danger, loyalty, and the way a landscape can shape every decision.

The stories were already pointing toward larger books.

Brown’s novels move through very different corners of American history and geography. The River of Kings sends two brothers down Georgia’s Altamaha River while tracing their father’s past and a sixteenth-century expedition. Gods of Howl Mountain heads to 1950s North Carolina, where a bootlegger, his folk-healer grandmother, and old family secrets collide. In Pride of Eden, a wildlife sanctuary on the Georgia coast becomes the center of a struggle against the trade in exotic animals.

He has also looked beyond the South without losing his interest in place. Wingwalkers follows Depression-era aerial performers and brings a young William Faulkner into their orbit. Rednecks reimagines the West Virginia Mine Wars and the Battle of Blair Mountain through miners, families, doctors, and union organizers. His 2026 novel, Wolvers, shifts to New Mexico’s Gila Wilderness, where a rancher and a Mexican gray wolf pack are drawn into a fight over land, survival, and revenge.

Across the books, Brown returns to people under pressure: veterans, workers, outcasts, families with unfinished business, and people who know the land better than they know themselves. His settings are never just scenery. Rivers, mountains, airfields, mining camps, and back roads all bring their own rules.

Brown has received the Southern Book Prize, the Audie Award in Fiction, the Weatherford Award in Fiction, and recognition as Georgia Author of the Year for Literary Fiction. He lives in Savannah, Georgia, and is the founder and editor-in-chief of a custom motorcycle publication. Old motorcycles, thunderstorms, and dogs with beards are among the things he says he likes, which feels about right for a writer drawn to weather, machines, animals, and long roads.
