That matters because these books are as much about a crew as about one man. Pearl is a key part of Tank's world, and so are the restaurant owners, former mobsters, boxers, psychics, dogs, and neighborhood characters who orbit the investigations. The feeling is gritty, but not joyless. There is banter, a lot of local color, and a strong sense that New York runs on favors, loyalty, and long memory as much as it does on official power.

The setting does a lot of work here. This is a Manhattan of brownstones, restaurants, back rooms, old friendships, and dangerous corners that have not been cleaned up by image management. Tank moves through it like someone who knows every shortcut and every bad habit the city has ever picked up. Carcaterra gives him cases with real forward drive, but he also gives him a moral code. Tank can live with crooks more easily than with dirty cops, because at least crooks are honest about what they are.
