Holy Frigging Matrimony

by Emma Chase

2013

Narrated by Drew Evans, this short story drops him and the Tangled gang into a high-end New York wedding where jealousy, bad decisions, and his outrageous commentary threaten to turn one couple's big day into unforgettable chaos.

Series background & context

The Tangled books follow a tight-knit group of New York investment bankers and their friends as they stumble, curse, and joke their way into grown-up love. At the center is Drew Evans, a wildly successful, wildly arrogant dealmaker whose life unravels the moment a new hire walks into his office.

Tangled opens with Drew holed up in his apartment, claiming to have a terrible case of the flu. In reality he is heartsick, and the story rewinds to show how he met Katherine Brooks, the brilliant associate who refuses to be impressed by his charm. Their office rivalry, narrated directly to the reader in Drew's unapologetically male voice, turns into a fast, funny, and surprisingly emotional enemies-to-lovers romance.

In the background of every book is a loud, loyal circle of family and friends. Drew's sister Alexandra, her husband Steven, their young daughter Mackenzie, and coworkers like Matthew Fisher and Dee Warren all weave in and out of each story, offering advice, meddling shamelessly, and sometimes stealing the scene entirely. Watching those relationships deepen over time is part of the payoff if you read the books in order.

The later novels widen the lens without losing that intimate feel. Twisted shifts to Kate's point of view and tackles what happens after the first happy ending, when miscommunication and fear start to chip away at a relationship. Tamed slides over to Drew's best friend Matthew and the fiercely independent Dee, giving the series another sly, male narrator and a different kind of commitment-shy hero to knock off balance.

Tied brings Drew and Kate back to the forefront as they try to make it down the aisle, surviving bachelor-party disasters, family expectations, and all the history between them. Along the way, short pieces like Holy Frigging Matrimony and It's a Wonderful Tangled Christmas Carol drop in on the gang at a raucous wedding and at Christmas, offering quick, comedic snapshots of where everyone ends up.

Across the series, the tone stays sharp and conversational. Drew in particular talks to the reader as if he is sharing a drink at the bar, unpacking his worst decisions with plenty of swagger and a grudging amount of honesty. The books are explicit, heavy on banter, and unafraid of crude jokes, but they also make room for real vulnerability as these selfish, successful people figure out how to show up for one another.

Taken together, the series traces Drew's evolution from smug womanizer to genuinely committed partner and father, without ever sanding off his sharp edges completely. Each book can be enjoyed as a standalone romantic comedy, but the running jokes, callbacks, and small emotional beats land hardest when you follow the whole messy, charming journey from the first claimed flu to the final happily ever after.
