Author bio

Tamera Alexander is an American novelist who writes Christian fiction rooted in real history, slow-burn romance, and the quiet ways faith can take shape in hard seasons. Her stories are known for carefully drawn characters, rich settings, and a steady undercurrent of hope.

She grew up in Decatur, Georgia, just outside Atlanta, the daughter of an insurance executive and a bank manager. As a girl she filled notebooks with poems and short stories, but she never imagined those pages might someday turn into a career. Practical voices around her nudged her toward business instead of writing, so that is the path she chose.

Alexander studied management at Harding University, where she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1983. After college she stepped into the corporate world in Atlanta, then joined a data communications company in Memphis as a customer service representative. Within a few years she was managing a large team and flying around the country to meet clients, learning a lot about leadership, problem solving, and the way people behave under pressure.

Family changes and new job opportunities for her husband, Joe, led to a series of moves: first to Texas, then to Greeley, Colorado. In Colorado she fell in love with the Rocky Mountains, their wide skies, and the stories tucked into old mining towns and frontier cemeteries. Those years in the West would later become the backdrop for many of her early novels.

The real turning point came through her mother-in-law, who handed her a copy of Janette Oke's Love Comes Softly. After her mother-in-law died suddenly, Alexander finally sat down and read the book. That story opened a door back to her childhood love of fiction. She began devouring Christian novels and, eventually, trying her own hand at writing. Her first manuscript, a historical set in 1870s Colorado, made it all the way to a publisher's review board before being rejected. Instead of quitting, she went back to school on her own, dissecting novels, studying structure, and learning the craft.

Her second completed manuscript became Rekindled, released in 2006 and set in the rugged Colorado Territory. That book launched the Fountain Creek Chronicles, followed by Revealed and Remembered, which trace different couples whose lives intersect around the town of Willow Springs. She then returned to the Rockies in the Timber Ridge Reflections series with From a Distance, Beyond This Moment, and Within My Heart, stories that blend frontier danger with questions of calling, integrity, and second chances.

In the mid-2000s Alexander and her family moved from Colorado back to Tennessee, where Joe joined Belmont University. Living within minutes of Belmont Mansion, Belle Meade Plantation, and Carnton, she began to anchor new trilogies in those historic Nashville sites. A Lasting Impression and its sister Belmont Mansion novels explore art, music, and identity in the years after the Civil War. The Belle Meade books, beginning with To Whisper Her Name and To Win Her Favor, dig into horse racing, class tension, and the legacy of slavery. The Carnton novels, including With This Pledge and Colors of Truth, circle around the Battle of Franklin and its aftermath, looking closely at the cost of war and the work of reconciliation.

Along the way her work has received industry honors such as Christy Awards and RITA Awards, and in 2020 she was inducted into the Christy Award Hall of Fame. Rather than focusing on accolades, she tends to talk about the readers she meets, book clubs that travel together to tour the houses she writes about, and the satisfaction of seeing history come alive for someone who once thought it was boring.

In 2023 she stepped into new territory with A Million Little Choices, a contemporary dual-timeline novel set largely in Atlanta. The book weaves together a modern marriage in crisis and a Civil War era household, giving her room to explore infidelity, forgiveness, and the way small decisions ripple across generations.

Today Alexander lives in the Nashville area with her husband, near the mansions that so often appear in her pages. Their two grown children and grandchildren live close by, and she happily answers to "Gram Tam." When she is not drafting or revising, she loves browsing antique shops, walking through old cemeteries, and spending time with her two Australian Terriers, Murphy and Bailey.

She often describes writing as one of the primary ways she grows closer to Christ, and she prays that each novel nudges readers in the same direction, even if only by a single, quiet step.
