Kiss Me Deadly
by Shannon Stacey
2006
Khail's touch means death, until he meets Bridget Sawyer and finds the one woman immune to his power. Their attraction is dangerous long before outside enemies close in.
Series background & context
Talons is an outlier in Shannon Stacey's catalog, and that is part of the appeal. While many readers know her best for contemporary romance, her contribution to the Talons world shows she can also work in a darker, more overtly paranormal register.
The Talons setting comes out of a shared anthology world built around bird shifters and supernatural danger. Stacey's story, Kiss Me Deadly, is short, sharp, and much moodier than the cozy New England feel of her later family series. The hero, Khail, is a deadly supernatural being whose touch kills, until he meets the one woman who can survive contact with him.
That central idea gives the story instant tension. Physical attraction is not merely inconvenient or emotionally risky. It is literally dangerous. The romance moves inside a world of supernatural power, hidden threats, and a hero who has every reason to think closeness is impossible for him.
Because this is a shorter paranormal work, the focus is tight. Stacey does not spend pages and pages building an elaborate fantasy system. She goes straight for atmosphere, chemistry, and the emotional shock of finding connection where none should be possible. It is a compact story, but it still has her familiar interest in vulnerability under all the defensive posturing.
If you are curious about Stacey's earlier or less typical work, Talons is a good place to see a different side of her. It is darker, sexier, and more supernatural than the books most people start with, but the emotional hook is still recognizable. Two people collide under impossible circumstances, and then the story asks whether wanting each other is worth the danger.
