Author bio
Talia Hibbert is a Black British romance writer whose books make room for messy feelings, sharp jokes, desire, and people who are often pushed to the edges of other love stories. Her family background includes Jamaican, Sierra Leonean, and Roma heritage, and that sense of many lives existing at once runs through her work.
She found romance young. At 12, she picked up a romance novel at her local library because of its bright cover and quickly became hooked on the genre’s emotional pull and promised happy endings.
Hibbert studied at the University of Leicester and, for a time, thought she might become a lawyer. As she approached her final year, though, worries about finding work that would be manageable alongside disability made her think seriously about writing for a living. In 2017, after the death of a beloved great-grandmother, she used part of an inheritance to take that risk and begin self-publishing romance.
It was a fast start. Hibbert published several shorter works before building toward longer novels, giving herself a limited window to see whether writing could become a job.
It did.
Her breakout with a wider audience came through Get a Life, Chloe Brown, the first Brown Sisters novel. Chloe is a chronically ill web designer who makes a list of ways to live more boldly, then reluctantly recruits her gruff handyman neighbor to help. The book combines flirtation and comedy with the everyday frustrations of chronic pain, medical assumptions, and letting people in.
The later Brown Sisters books keep the family connection while changing the romantic setup. Take a Hint, Dani Brown follows a cynical academic and a security guard who fake a relationship. Act Your Age, Eve Brown pairs an impulsive woman looking for a new direction with the tightly organized owner of a country bed-and-breakfast. Readers often come for the banter and stay for the way the characters are allowed to be difficult, funny, anxious, disabled, queer, ambitious, or unsure without being treated as problems to solve.
Hibbert also writes small-town romance, holiday stories, paranormal comedy, and young adult romance. In A Girl Like Her, a guarded comic-book-loving woman faces small-town gossip and an unexpectedly patient neighbor. Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute turns former best friends and academic rivals into reluctant teammates on an outdoor survival course. Across these books, she returns to people learning that care, trust, and desire can be practical things, not just grand gestures.
Her characters talk back. They make bad calls, protect themselves too hard, and sometimes need a nudge toward the life they actually want.
Hibbert is autistic and disabled, and she has spoken openly about writing characters whose lives include chronic illness, neurodivergence, anxiety, and depression. She lives in the UK and continues to write romances centered on flawed people getting the chance to be known and loved.
