Tales of Xest begins with Tippi Tudor, a young woman in Salem who has spent years trying hard not to believe in magic. Her mother filled her childhood with frightening stories about creatures, spells, and the danger waiting beyond ordinary life. Tippi has learned to treat those memories as the product of illness. She keeps her head down, works at a shop that caters to believers, and wants nothing more than a quiet, uneventful life.

That plan does not last.

A séance, a ghost, and an unpaid magical debt send Tippi somewhere she never knew existed: Xest. It is a separate world where magic shapes status, work, travel, and survival. People can cross worlds through unusual means, magical ability is measured and judged, and a person without the right kind of power can quickly become someone else's property. Tippi arrives as a supposedly minor Whimsy witch, but the label does not explain everything about her.

The series follows Tippi as she tries to understand Xest's rules and decide whether she belongs there. At first, she wants only to get back to Salem. Over time, the strange city begins to offer what her old life rarely did, friends, work, and the possibility of a place where she is not treated as broken or strange. That sense of belonging comes with a price. Xest has its own politics, factions, dangerous bargains, and people who would rather Tippi stay powerless.

Hawk is central to that tension. He is powerful, guarded, and often frustratingly hard to read. His connection to Tippi builds slowly across the books, alongside the larger questions surrounding her magic, her family history, and the forces putting pressure on Xest. Their relationship is not a quick fix for Tippi's problems. Trust has to be earned, and both characters keep secrets.

The supporting cast adds some warmth and mischief to a world that can otherwise be harsh. Tippi finds allies among witches, warlocks, demons, magical workers, and several creatures who make life in Xest stranger than she ever imagined. The books balance danger with banter, friendship, and Tippi's practical, skeptical view of events that would overwhelm most people.

This is an urban fantasy series with an alternate-world twist, a slow-burn romance, and a heroine learning that the things she feared about herself may also be the things that make her important.
