Talba Wallis Books in Order

Talba Wallis walks into Julie Smith's fiction already sounding like nobody else. She works from the margins, not from inside law enforcement, so she can pass through family secrets, literary feuds, back offices, rundown neighborhoods, and rich people's nonsense with equal ease. She is often undercover, often improvising, and often one bad idea away from trouble.

A big part of the series is her partnership with Eddie Valentino, the older private investigator who becomes boss, mentor, and occasional brake pedal. Eddie is seasoned, stubborn, and skeptical. Talba is brilliant, restless, and not naturally cautious. Their back-and-forth gives the books a lot of warmth. So does Miz Clara, whose expectations, irritation, and fierce love keep Talba tied to family even when Talba wants to float free.

The cases themselves cover a wide range. Louisiana Hotshot brings Talba into PI work while a vulnerable girl is in danger and old family questions start to surface. Louisiana Bigshot pushes her into suspicious death, race, and small-town secrets. Louisiana Lament drops her into a murder among arts patrons and literary hangers-on. P.I. on a Hot Tin Roof gives her a crooked judge, a deeply unhealthy household, and the kind of undercover job that turns personal fast. Even the shorter Talba stories carry the same mix of humor, empathy, and local color.

What holds the series together is Talba's voice. She is funny, but not just for effect. She is also alert to class, race, gender, and the ways people perform versions of themselves to survive. Smith lets the books be entertaining without flattening those realities. Talba can flirt, joke, write poems, hack systems, and still notice who is vulnerable in a room and who thinks they own it.
