Series background & context

The Tahoe Tessie Mysteries put Tessie King in a world she never planned to run. After her father's death, Tessie inherits the Royal Lakeside, a major casino in South Lake Tahoe. She has spent years away from Tahoe and comes from the art world, not the casino business, so the inheritance is less a windfall than a very large problem.

In Luck Be a Lady, questions about her father's death bring Tessie into contact with high-stakes cons, possible inside jobs, organized-crime concerns, and FBI agent Devin Ryder. She needs to learn the business quickly while figuring out whether her father died naturally or was murdered.

The casino setting makes every case feel a little larger. There are high rollers, security concerns, staff politics, money moving through the building, and plenty of people who know how to bluff. Tessie is new to this side of her family's life, which gives her a useful outsider's view but also leaves her unsure whom to trust.

Tessie has more at stake than solving a single murder. The Royal Lakeside is her father's legacy, and its reputation, finances, and future are tied to the people around her. That personal connection keeps her involved when police would prefer she stay out of the way.

The mood remains light and character-driven even when the crimes point toward serious trouble. There is romantic tension, family baggage, and the pleasure of watching an inexperienced casino owner learn when to take a risk and when to walk away.

At the Royal Lakeside, the house always has secrets.

Start with Luck Be a Lady, which introduces Tessie, the casino, and the questions surrounding her father's death. Hey Big Spender continues her Tahoe cases, while Baby It's Cold Outside offers a holiday novella in the same setting.

This short series is a good pick for readers who like cozy mysteries with a glitzier backdrop, amateur sleuthing, and casino stakes that are more than metaphorical.
