Author bio
T.A. Williams writes the kind of books that feel like a holiday you can slip into on a weekday evening. His real name is Trevor, but he chose the initials on his covers so readers would meet the stories before they met the man.
He was born in England to a Scottish mother and a Welsh father, and grew up with a mix of voices and landscapes around him. After studying modern languages at Nottingham University, he headed for mainland Europe, living and working in Switzerland, France and Italy.
Those years abroad turned into a career. Williams taught English, then went on to run one of the best known language schools in the United Kingdom. Along the way he taught everyone from nervous schoolchildren to princes, beauty queens and business leaders, picking up fluent languages and a deep feel for how people talk and think.
Travel never really stopped. He has cycled long distances, eaten unusual meals that included snake and alligator, and collected the kind of small mishaps involving dogs, insects and the odd parasite that later turn into throwaway lines in his books. Today he lives in a quiet Devon village with his Italian wife, balancing English lanes with memories of sun soaked piazzas.
Williams has been writing since his teens and has tried his hand at thrillers, historical adventures and short stories. Over time he found his home in warm contemporary romance and, more recently, in cosy crime. A thread that runs through almost everything he writes is a black labrador, a sort of four legged good luck charm who pads in and out of the stories.
In his romantic novels, like Dreaming of Venice, Under a Siena Sun, A Little Piece of Paradise and A Chance in a Million, readers meet women at turning points in their lives. They are usually juggling work, heartbreak and family complications when an unexpected trip, a new job or a last chance offer drops them into a new landscape.
Those landscapes matter. Whether he is writing about Venice at dawn, a hillside village in Chianti or a castle above the Ligurian coast, Williams lingers on everyday details, from coffee at a bar counter to the way light falls on old stone. The result is fiction that doubles as gentle armchair travel.
His Armstrong and Oscar series, which begins with Murder in Tuscany, shifts that sensibility into mystery. Retired detective Dan Armstrong and his labrador sidekick investigate murders against the backdrop of vineyards, hill towns and seaside resorts, mixing classic whodunit puzzles with humour and friendship.
Across genres, certain themes repeat. Williams is drawn to second chances, late career reinventions and the idea that it is never too late to fall in love with a person, a place or a new version of your own life. He keeps the prose light, the emotions sincere and the endings hopeful.
