Author bio
TA White is the pen name of Tobey White, a fantasy and science fiction writer whose books usually combine layered worlds, capable heroines, and a thread of romance that never takes over the plot. She writes fantasy and science fiction with a hint of romance, and across those different settings her stories tend to share the same pull: strong momentum, dangerous politics, and women who have to think fast.
She was born in Tacoma, Washington, and spent much of her childhood moving around because her father served in the Marine Corps. Growing up that way seems to have left a mark on her fiction. Many of her protagonists are good at entering unfamiliar places, reading the room quickly, and adapting before anyone else catches up.
Writing started early, even if it did not go smoothly.
On her author site, White jokes that several early attempts to co-write books with friends ended in failure, including one short-lived effort she remembers as the cookie fiasco. In 1999 she moved to Columbus, Ohio, went to high school there, and later studied at the Ohio University Scripps School of Journalism.
Before publishing fiction, she worked a long list of jobs. She spent time at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, worked at a pool, and after college followed her parents into military service by joining the Army. In her books, work tends to matter. Training matters. Logistics matter. Her characters usually get through trouble by staying calm, noticing details, and doing the next hard thing.
While deployed to Afghanistan, she began writing the novel that became Dragon-Ridden. Around the same time, the seed of The Broken Lands showed up as well. After returning to the United States, she left the military and finished her first novel while looking for an ordinary job.
That beginning explains a lot about her fiction.
Books like Dragon-Ridden, Pathfinder's Way, Shadow's Messenger, and Rules of Redemption show the range of what she does. One series gives readers imperial dragon politics and a heroine trying to recover a missing past. Another drops a pathfinder into a brutal wilderness where alliances matter as much as strength. Another turns Columbus into an urban fantasy battleground full of vampires, fae, and favors that go bad fast. Another heads into wrecked ships, alien Houses, and the long shadow of war. Readers who start with Pathfinder's Way often stay for the survival tension and shifting alliances. Shadow's Messenger leans more contemporary and voice-driven, while Rules of Redemption opens into a wider space opera. Dragon-Ridden sits nicely in the middle, mixing mystery, dragons, and a city full of buried trouble.
Across all of these books, White keeps returning to a few things readers tend to like: found family, hidden histories, political traps, and heroines who are competent without feeling effortless. Tate, Shea, Aileen, and Kira all know how to survive, but they are not invulnerable. They get cornered, misread people, carry old damage, and still keep moving. She also comes back again and again to loyalty, old bargains, and the cost of power.
Today, White lives in Delaware, Ohio, with her husband and their two cats, Loki and Odin. She has joked that the cats act like her overlords, which feels about right for a writer who clearly enjoys strong personalities and worlds with rules of their own.
