Sworn To Loathe You Books in Order

This is the Rachel John series for readers who like tension with a grin on its face. The people in Sworn To Loathe You are annoyed, wary, prickly, or firmly convinced that this one specific person is a terrible idea. Then work, friendship, family, or plain bad luck keeps forcing them back into each other's orbit until the argument starts to look suspiciously like flirting.

The prequel, Worst Neighbor Ever, establishes the mood right away. Melissa is sure Connor is a snoop, a bad neighbor, and probably worse. Connor is equally convinced Melissa is too much trouble to get involved with. It is a compact story, but it shows the series' basic instinct. Rachel John likes couples who start from irritation, jump to wild conclusions, and then discover that proximity makes contempt much harder to maintain.

I Hated You First pushes that energy into a tighter social web. Clay has feelings for Lauren, but she is his best friend's half-sister, his boss's daughter, and someone he believes he should absolutely not want. Lauren, meanwhile, is trying very hard not to let an old crush get the better of her. The setup is classic Rachel John, off-limits attraction wrapped in banter, history, and just enough family entanglement to make everything harder.

From there the series keeps widening its little world. Carpool Crush turns a daily ride to work into a second-chance romance full of mixed signals and old hurt. Not Friends throws Sadie and Denver into the same startup after they have already spent plenty of time irritating each other through a shared friend group. Keep It Together takes the friend-zone route, with Carmen determined to keep Isaac safely boxed as a friend while he makes it very hard to ignore the chemistry. Freelance Flirt adds a single mom, a longtime flirt, a struggling flower shop, and the problem of not wanting to trust the one man who keeps showing up when it matters.

One of the pleasures of the series is that it feels interconnected without getting heavy. Side characters recur. Friends get mentioned before they become leads. Family members and neighbors keep wandering through with opinions, jokes, and the occasional helpful push. That makes the books satisfying on their own, but even better in sequence, because each couple gets to arrive with some history already built around them.

The tone is clean, contemporary, and very conversational. The conflicts are usually personal rather than melodramatic, fear of commitment, old misunderstandings, bad timing, job overlap, family complications, but that is exactly why they work. These characters are not fighting villains. They are trying to overcome their own defensive habits. The series title sounds extreme, but the books themselves are warm-hearted. They know loathing is often just a cover story for attraction, and they have a lot of fun proving it.
