Sweet Pea Flings Books in Order

Sweet Pea Flings lives up to its name at first glance, but the series gets its charm from the way those supposedly casual setups stop staying casual. The town of Sweet Pea is warm, familiar, and just nosy enough to make every attempt at keeping romance simple feel a little doomed from the start.

Nobody in this series is nearly as chill as they claim to be.

The opening book, Fooling Around with Ford, introduces a heroine who has retreated to her parents' place inside a retirement community after her life falls apart. She plans to hide, regroup, and wallow a little. Instead, she meets Ford Birmingham, the groundskeeper who destroys some of her belongings with a lawnmower and then keeps showing up in ways that make it harder for her to leave town, or him, behind. It is a great example of Piper James taking an offbeat setting and using it for both humor and heart.

Sneaking Around with Slade moves the series into second chance territory. Saylor and Slade already share a secret history, one wrapped up in age difference, family ties, and the fact that he is her brother's best friend. When he comes back to town and ends up living next door, the past stops being something they can safely ignore. This book has a little more ache in it, but it still fits neatly into the series' breezy rhythm.

Then Breaking Them Up with Brodie takes a sharp turn into fake dating and celebrity romance. Keira wants to make her ex jealous. Brodie, a Hollywood star with an image problem, needs a convincing girlfriend. Their arrangement is ridiculous on paper and exactly the sort of thing Piper James knows how to make entertaining. Even with the movie-star angle, though, the series never loses its small-town grounding.

That is really the key to Sweet Pea Flings. The premises vary, temporary escape, secret history, public fake relationship, but the emotional world stays recognizable. These books are about people who are trying not to want too much, then realizing too late that they already do. Friends and family keep the stories tied together, and the town gives everything a cozy, lived-in feeling.

You can pick up any of the three and follow the romance just fine. But reading them in order lets you watch the web of relationships expand, which adds to the payoff when familiar side characters step forward. If you want contemporary romance that feels a little playful, a little flirty, and a lot more emotionally invested than the word fling would suggest, this series does the job nicely.
