Author bio
Susanna Gregory is the pen name of Elizabeth Cruwys, a British writer of historical crime fiction who was raised in Bristol. That city’s churches, old streets, and deep store of medieval history gave her an early feel for the kind of past she would later write about.
After university, she spent three years as a police officer in Leeds. It was her first proper job, and by her own account it taught her a lot about people, crime, and the surprising mix of selfishness and kindness that can appear when lives go wrong.
It turned out to be useful training for a mystery novelist.
She then moved back into academic life, taking a master’s degree at Durham and a PhD at Cambridge. Her research career ranged widely: she studied pollution in seals, worked with whales and walruses, spent seventeen field seasons in the Arctic or Antarctic, and later taught comparative anatomy and biological anthropology. She also worked as an environmental consultant, so her path to fiction was anything but narrow.
Cambridge mattered in another way, too. As a Fellow, Tutor, and Research Associate, she saw the university from the inside, not just its scholarship but its factions, rivalries, and private absurdities. That experience fed directly into the Matthew Bartholomew novels, which use the lost Cambridge college of Michaelhouse as both home base and pressure cooker.
Her first novel as Susanna Gregory was A Plague on Both Your Houses in 1996. It introduced Matthew Bartholomew, a physician in fourteenth-century Cambridge whose preference for observation and practical medicine often sets him against relics, rumor, and fear. Readers who like the series usually point to the same pleasures: detailed college life, strong supporting characters, and mysteries that grow naturally out of money troubles, church politics, civic grudges, and the long shadow of the Black Death.
She likes periods when the world feels unsettled.
That instinct shaped the Thomas Chaloner books too. Beginning with A Conspiracy of Violence, they move to Restoration London, where a former Parliamentarian spy must survive the court of Charles II while solving murders tangled up with finance, espionage, religion, and government. Books such as The Butcher of Smithfield show the same strengths as the Bartholomew novels, careful research, a crowded social world, and investigators who have to think their way through institutions as much as through clues.
Gregory has also written with her husband, Beau Riffenburgh, under the shared name Simon Beaufort. Together they created the Sir Geoffrey Mappestone mysteries, set in the years after the First Crusade, and the Alec Lonsdale books, which bring murder and newspaper investigation to Victorian London. She was also part of the Medieval Murderers, a group of historical crime writers who toured literary events together and wrote linked novels built around relics, manuscripts, cursed objects, and other troublemaking pieces of the past.
What stands out across all this work is her interest in systems as much as suspects. Colleges, monasteries, courts, guilds, newspapers, and royal households all become places where ambition, habit, faith, and panic can turn deadly. Her protagonists tend to be intelligent but not all-powerful, which keeps the stories grounded. She now lives in a hamlet in southwest Wales with Riffenburgh, continuing the blend of research and storytelling that runs through all her books.
