Series background & context
Sunburned Land is a mature-age Christian romance and family saga set at Goddard Downs, a third-generation cattle station in the remote Kimberley region of northern Australia. The setting is wide, hot, beautiful, and demanding. Roads are long, weather can change plans quickly, and the work of keeping a station running shapes every family's decision.
The series starts with Slow Road to Love. Maggie Donovan is a city reporter whose husband has left her after decades of marriage. Looking for a change, she travels north to write about women living on isolated cattle stations. There she meets Frank Goddard, a widower who has built his life around family, faith, and the station he loves.
Neither of them expected a second chance.
Maggie and Frank's relationship gives the first books their emotional center, but the series soon becomes bigger than one couple. Their children, relatives, and friends each face decisions about love, work, loss, and where they belong. Goddard Downs is both home and responsibility, and changes within the family can affect the future of the whole place.
The books include threats to the cattle business, health scares, grief, changing family roles, and younger characters trying to build lives that do not simply follow old expectations. Serena struggles with the aftermath of a devastating fire and questions her value. Joshua Goddard and Stella Martin face their own doubts as station life, faith, and romance pull them in different directions. Later stories make room for Sean, Elizabeth, Janella, David, and the wider Goddard circle.
The landscape is central to the series. The Kimberley is not presented as an easy escape from city life. It brings isolation, rough travel, financial pressure, and a deep reliance on neighbours. It also gives the characters space to think, work together, and discover what they want from the next stage of life.
These stories move at a family-saga pace. There are romances, but there are also meals around the table, station jobs, hard conversations, and the consequences of choices made years earlier. Faith appears in ordinary responses to uncertainty, whether someone is facing a marriage problem, an illness, a financial threat, or a loss they do not understand.
The series is especially suited to readers who enjoy later-in-life love stories and Australian rural settings. Begin with Slow Road to Love for Maggie and Frank's first meeting, then continue in order to follow the Goddard family as Goddard Downs enters new seasons.
