Author bio
Stuart Gibbs was born in Philadelphia in 1969. When he was five, his family moved to Washington, D.C., and when he was seven, they moved again to San Antonio, where he grew up. He has said he was writing stories in kindergarten, which makes his career look a lot like a very long-running plan.
He was curious early, and he stayed that way.
At the University of Pennsylvania, he studied biology instead of English. That choice mattered. While in college, he worked on a capybara research project at the Philadelphia Zoo, and years later that mix of science, animal behavior, and backstage zoo life helped shape the FunJungle books. His fiction often feels that way: part adventure, part puzzle, part a writer happily following his own questions.
Then Hollywood happened.
After college, Gibbs moved to Los Angeles during the screenplay boom of the 1990s and worked his way through film and television. He has written screenplays including Showdown, See Spot Run, and Repli-Kate, worked on animated films, and developed TV projects for major networks. He has said that he came to being an author after working in film, and that background still shows in the way his books move, with quick scenes, clean setups, and a strong sense of timing.
His first novel, Belly Up, introduced Teddy Fitzroy, a kid who lives at a giant zoo and keeps stumbling into mysteries involving animals and very suspicious adults. Then came Spy School, which gave readers Ben Ripley, a middle school math whiz who dreams of the CIA and gets pulled into danger long before he is ready. Space Case took that same fast, funny mystery style to the moon, while Charlie Thorne and the Last Equation pushed into globetrotting thriller territory. Readers tend to come to Gibbs for the jokes and the cliffhangers, then stay for the smart kids who keep noticing what everyone else misses.
He also likes to change the scenery without losing his voice. The Once Upon a Tim books take his comic timing into a fairy tale world of peasants, junior knights, and terrible royal decisions. The Last Musketeer trilogy mixes time travel with seventeenth-century swordplay. Even when the setting changes completely, his stories usually turn on the same things: curiosity, resourcefulness, hidden motives, and young characters trying to stay brave while adults make a mess of things.
He makes room for facts without making them feel like homework.
That may be one reason his books connect with so many middle grade readers. He likes codes, history, science, travel, animals, and underdogs, and those interests keep showing up in different combinations. A Stuart Gibbs hero is often outmatched on paper, but still paying better attention than the people around them.
These days he lives in Los Angeles with his family. He still talks often about research, travel, hiking, and the real-world details that spark new ideas. That steady curiosity, more than anything else, seems to be the engine behind the whole body of work.
