Day of the Dogs

by Andrew Cartmel

2005

Johnny Alpha and Middenface McNulty join a manhunt for the killer of a wealthy client's family, only to discover they have been lured into a deadly trap. It is a hard-driving Strontium Dog story with betrayal, mutant camaraderie, and a nasty twist.

Series background & context

Strontium Dog is one of those science fiction premises that sounds pulpy until you realise how much bite it has. In a future shaped by nuclear fallout, mutants are pushed to the edges of society and treated as lesser citizens. Many end up doing the jobs nobody else wants, including bounty hunting across the galaxy.

That is where Johnny Alpha comes in.

Johnny is the series' great central figure, a mutant hunter with a distinctive look, a hard life behind him, and just enough decency to make the ugliness around him stand out. He is usually joined by Middenface McNulty, which means the stories get a useful mix of action, sarcasm, and battered friendship. Together they move through jobs that start as manhunts and end up exposing something nastier underneath.

Andrew Cartmel's Day of the Dogs fits the line nicely. A hired pursuit turns into a trap, loyalties get tested, and the series' old mix of violent adventure and social bitterness stays intact. That is what gives Strontium Dog its staying power. It can do chases, shoot-outs, grotesque villains, and wild sci-fi set pieces, but there is always prejudice humming below the action.

These are not polished space-opera adventures.

They are rougher than that, and better for it. The series cares about outsiders, dirty deals, and the price of surviving in a world that has already decided what you are worth. If you like future fiction with grit, dark humour, and a hero who never quite gets treated fairly even when he saves the day, this is the territory.
