Stray Books in Order

The Stray series is a two-book dystopian science-fiction story about a teenager raised inside a government program that claims to give troubled children a better life. Its heroine, Lona Sixteen Always, has learned to accept an existence that is tightly scheduled, monitored, and built around someone else’s memories.

The program is called the Path. For nearly every hour of every day, Lona relives the memories of Julian, a boy whose life has been selected as a safe model for children in her quadrant. She knows his routines, his family, and his ordinary childhood better than she knows her own past. The arrangement is supposed to keep life orderly and predictable.

Then Lona begins to think beyond the Path. When Fenn, a boy she believed had moved on in the program, appears with a chance to leave, she has to face the fact that the world she knows may be built on lies. Stray follows her first unsteady steps into real choices, real relationships, and the dangers hidden outside the system.

Freedom turns out to be harder than it sounds.

In Burn, Lona is no longer simply trying to escape. Strange dreams and broken pieces of memory lead her back toward questions about her family, her identity, and the people who designed the Path. The sequel keeps the focus close to Lona as she tries to decide whom to trust while the past becomes harder to ignore.

These books use virtual reality and a near-future setting, but their concerns are immediate: how much of a person’s life should other people control, what makes a memory reliable, and whether safety is worth the loss of freedom. Expect a tense, character-focused story with a central romance, unsettling technology, and a heroine learning how to make a life that belongs to her.
