Series background & context

Strange Gifts is Mary Kennedy’s paranormal romance series, and it leans into the word “strange” in a very human way. The people at the center of these books have unusual abilities, but they are not treated like shiny superpowers. They are burdens, questions, and sometimes the reason danger finds them first.

The series begins with Dark Visions. Aislinn Carter has lived with pain for so long that it has become normal to her. Then Kane Jackson enters her life, and their abilities seem to strengthen each other. The mystery around their gifts quickly becomes tied to a murder investigation, so the romance grows while they are trying to stay alive and understand what they can do.

The books are small in number but wide in feel.

Dark Medicine brings in Dr. Adam Thorn, an ex-Army surgeon and one of the Gifted, who meets Fiona Graham in Ireland. Fiona is hiding gifts of her own, and their search for answers moves from the Irish countryside to Wyoming. Dark Flame turns to Phillip “Flip” Cho, who has known since childhood that he is different and has spent much of his life trying to understand what that means.

The series blends romantic suspense with paranormal discovery. There are killers, hidden histories, strange abilities, emotional wounds, and a group of people who slowly realize they may not be as alone as they thought. Kennedy keeps the focus on relationships as much as powers. The question is not only what the characters can do, but who they can trust with the truth.

Because Strange Gifts has only three books, it is an easy side door into Kennedy’s work. Start with Dark Visions, then continue to Dark Medicine and Dark Flame. Reading in order helps because the characters are connected by the bigger mystery of the gifts and by the fragile community they build around them.
