Author bio
Steven Becker writes action-adventure novels that stay close to the water. His stories are full of divers, fishermen, salvors, smugglers, treasure hunters, and people who know that beautiful places can turn dangerous in a hurry. The Florida Keys show up again and again in his work, not just as scenery, but as a working landscape with tides, storms, backwaters, and all the trouble that comes with them.
He came to fiction the long way around.
Before the novels, Becker worked in construction and liked to think of himself as a builder because he was hands-on with the work. He also built a background in technical writing, including manuals for a restaurant chain, and wrote nonfiction along the way. That practical side never really left. In his fiction, the boats, dive jobs, tools, and salvage work usually feel like things the writer has actually handled.
He started writing before his daughter was born in 1995, but life crowded the project out. Family came first, and so did the day job. Years later, when his daughter was old enough to drive and his business needed less of his daily attention, he returned to the story he had been carrying around for roughly fifteen years. That book became Wood's Reef, the novel that helped launch his fiction career in 2013.
That delay shaped the work.
Becker has said he still thinks of himself as a writer more than an author, which fits the tone of his career. There is nothing overnight about it. He built his readership book by book, especially through the Mac Travis novels, where readers get a mix of Florida Keys adventure, underwater discoveries, local politics, and offbeat coastal characters. Wood's Relic, Wood's Reef, and Wood's Wall are good examples of the lane he works in, fast-moving stories with a strong sense of place.
From there, he widened the map without losing the things that made the early books work. The Kurt Hunter mysteries move into Biscayne National Park and Miami. Pirate and the Tides of Fortune books take him into historical high-seas adventure. The Storm novels, including Storm Force, push into international espionage and old-world intrigue. Even across those different series, the same interests keep showing up: capable people, coastal settings, hidden history, and danger that starts small before getting much bigger.
The water is never just background in these books.
Becker has been open about the fact that many of his ideas come from real experiences on, in, or under the water. He dives, fishes, boats, paddles, and explores, and that firsthand knowledge gives the fiction its grounded feel. He has also described himself as a disciplined worker, aiming for a couple of focused writing hours, or a few thousand words, before the rest of life gets in the way. Starting a book, he has said, is the hardest part. Once he gets moving, the story tends to take over.
His life now still looks closely tied to the coast. On his site, he says he splits his time between Tampa and the Florida Keys, usually paddling, sailing, diving, fishing, or scouting the next setting. It makes sense. These books read like they come from someone who knows salt air, weather windows, working boats, and the kind of trouble that can drift in on the tide.
