Steven Axelrod Books in Order

Steven Axelrod was born in New York City and grew up between Manhattan and Beverly Hills. His father was George Axelrod, the playwright and screenwriter behind Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Manchurian Candidate, so stories, scripts, and rewrites were part of the household from the start.

He came to writing through the movie business first.

Axelrod spent years pitching screenplays and working around Hollywood, and he remains a member of the Writers Guild of America. Later he earned an MFA in writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts, a move that helped shift his focus from screen work to fiction he could build on the page at his own pace.

Nantucket changed the rest of the story. He settled on the island, raised two children, and supported himself painting houses while continuing to write. That double life, contractor by day and novelist whenever he could steal the hours, still feels like an important part of how readers picture him.

He also writes poetry, and some of that sensibility slips into his fiction.

His first novel, Paranoid, is a conspiracy thriller built on a great hook: after Air Force One crashes, the president's son becomes convinced the man who survived is not really his father. Just Like in the Movies turns toward Hollywood, following an insider and an ambitious young director through the grind, ego, and longing of the film world. Heat of the Moment goes darker, trapping a schoolteacher in a spiral of guilt, manipulation, and violence.

The books most readers start with, though, are the Henry Kennis mysteries. Beginning with Nantucket Sawbuck in 2014, Axelrod created a poetry-writing police chief on Nantucket and gave him cases that are never just about one dead body. In books like Nantucket Five-Spot, Nantucket Grand, Nantucket Counterfeit, and Nantucket Penny, murder investigations open into class tension, addiction, family trouble, old grudges, and the gap between the island's postcard beauty and its year-round reality.

That mix is a big part of his appeal. Readers who like Axelrod tend to respond to the knotty plots, the dry humor, and the way he uses Nantucket as more than scenery. Henry Kennis is thoughtful, stubborn, and a little off-center for a police chief, which gives the series a different rhythm from swagger-heavy crime fiction.

Axelrod has also published essays, reviews, and shorter pieces in literary and pulp-leaning outlets. Even when the mode shifts from political conspiracy to Hollywood satire to island mystery, he keeps circling the same interests: pressure, self-invention, hidden damage, and the trouble people cause when they start believing their own stories.

He still lives on Nantucket, where he writes and paints houses. It is a very Steven Axelrod detail that those two jobs can sound completely mismatched and still make perfect sense together.
