Series background & context
Steve Regan is Stephen Bentley's undercover man, and this series is built around the pressure of living under false names, false loyalties, and constant threat. The backstory begins with The Secret, where young C.I.D. detective Steven Hanrahan, shaken by personal loss, is offered his first covert role in 1970s Liverpool. That is where the legend of Steve Regan starts, not as a glamorous secret agent, but as a working detective asked to disappear into someone else's life.
Once Regan steps over that line, the books rarely let him breathe. In Who The F*ck Am I?, Dilemma, and Rivers of Blood, he moves through cocaine deals, Mafia networks, smuggling routes, and political plots that stretch from Britain to Thailand, Australia, and beyond. He is usually trying to stop something large and violent, but the immediate problem is always the same, can he keep his cover, read the room, and stay alive long enough to finish the job?
That is harder than it sounds.
What makes these books work is that undercover life is not treated like a clever trick. Bentley keeps the strain in view. Regan has to lie well enough to be believed by killers, traffickers, and fixers, while still holding onto some sense of who he really is. The series title says a lot. Identity is not just a theme here, it is a practical problem. Every friendship might be a setup. Every mistake might be fatal. Every success leaves a mark.
The settings help give each book its own flavor. Liverpool and London bring working-class grit, old loyalties, and police pressure. Thailand adds heat, improvisation, and street-level danger. Australia and later New York and Bangkok widen the scale again. By the time you reach Redemption and Bloodline Vendetta, the series has opened out into a bigger family story too, especially through Regan's relationship with his son Marco and the long shadow cast by the past.
There is plenty of action, but these are not just operation novels. They are also about temptation, compromise, and the emotional cost of acting like someone else for too long. Regan has a dry Liverpool edge to him, and that touch of humor helps when the pressure gets brutal. He is not a superhero. He is a man trying to stay one step ahead of people who would happily kill him if they knew his real name.
Expect hard-edged crime thrillers with mob politics, covert work, and a hero who wins by nerve as much as force. If you like stories where the main character is always one bad decision away from disaster, this series is very much in that lane.
