She self-published Diary of a Mad Fat Girl in late 2010, and the book took off through word of mouth. It became a bestseller as an ebook, sold in large numbers, and helped make McAfee one of the early self-publishing success stories people still remember from that moment in publishing. The novel was later rereleased in print, and it opened the door to a wider audience.
