Steamed Books in Order

The Steamed books are Katie MacAlister taking her comedy instincts into steampunk. The result is less about solemn brass-and-gears world-building and more about what happens when very normal people are shoved into a setting full of airships, secret agendas, improbable inventions, and romance that refuses to behave.

That fish-out-of-water energy does a lot of the work.

The first book starts with Jack Fletcher, a computer technician who is not looking to become anyone's hero. Through a piece of experimental technology and one badly timed interruption, he and his sister land somewhere very different from where they expected to be. That somewhere includes Octavia Pye, an airship captain with secrets, competence, and very little patience for stowaways. Their collision sets the tone for the whole branch of the series.

MacAlister treats the steampunk elements as part playground, part pressure cooker. Airships, gadgets, hidden plots, and social hierarchies are all there, but the real engine is still the characters. Jack is clever without being swaggering. Octavia has authority, baggage, and reason not to trust him. Put them in a cramped, dangerous situation and the sparks mostly take care of themselves.

The follow-up stories keep that mix of adventure and romance alive. There are thieves, schemes, reversals, and the general sense that nobody is going to get through the day without at least one plan collapsing in a dramatic fashion. Even when the setting gets bigger, the tone stays playful.

If you want steampunk that reads like a romantic comedy first and a machinery showcase second, this series is a very good fit. It has enough world-building to be fun, enough tension to matter, and enough banter to remind you that MacAlister is never more at home than when smart people are trapped in ridiculous circumstances together.
