Razor's Edge

by Martha Wells

2013

During a mission to secure crucial supplies for the Rebellion, Leia and Han are captured by pirates who turn out to be desperate survivors from Alderaan. Caught between helping her scattered people and protecting the Alliance, Leia has to outmaneuver both the raiders and the Empire closing in.

Series background & context

The Star Wars: Empire and Rebellion line is a set of stand alone novels focused on the classic trilogy heroes between the destruction of the first Death Star and the events on Hoth. Martha Wells's contribution, Razor's Edge, centers on Princess Leia during a critical supply mission for the Rebel Alliance.

When Leia and Han travel to strike a deal for badly needed materials, their ship is ambushed and forced into pirate controlled space. The raiders who capture them turn out to be survivors from Alderaan, now living by theft and intimidation in the shadow of the Empire that destroyed their world.

Leia is pulled between conflicting duties. She wants to help her scattered people and cannot ignore the anger and grief driving the pirates, but every delay endangers the hidden fleet and the construction of the Hoth base. As Imperial forces close in, Leia, Han, Luke, and Chewbacca have to navigate treachery on both sides and make hard choices about loyalty and survival.

The book leans into character moments and moral dilemmas rather than Jedi mysticism, making it a good fit for readers who enjoy Wells's focus on relationships and political tension inside high adventure.
