Series background & context

The Strange New Worlds novel line follows the same basic strength as the show. It brings back episodic adventure, but it does not pretend the characters are blank slates. Christopher Pike, Una Chin-Riley, Spock, Chapel, La'An, and the rest of the crew all carry personal history into missions that can still turn weird, dangerous, or funny at a moment's notice.

That blend is the point.

These books tend to feel a little more character-forward than older tie-ins, without giving up the pleasure of a big weekly-style premise. David Mack's entry pushes the crew into a research-station crisis near a black hole, which is exactly the kind of scientific danger Trek loves, but it also gives Pike's past real weight in the middle of the action.

If you want modern Star Trek energy with a classic adventure frame, this is a very comfortable place to start.
