Star Trek Adventures (James Blish) Books in Order

James Blish's Star Trek adventures come from the first wave of official fiction based on the original television series. Most are compact prose adaptations of episodes featuring Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew, while Spock Must Die! is an original novel that sends the familiar characters into a crisis built for the page.

The adaptations were written when Star Trek continuity was still loose and expanding. Blish commonly worked from scripts or script drafts, which means the stories may not always line up with the versions viewers remember. A character may be described differently, an explanation may change, or a plot detail may reflect an earlier version of the episode.

That is part of their charm.

Instead of treating those differences as mistakes, it helps to see these books as an alternate window into the original series. They preserve how the franchise looked before decades of later novels, reference books, and screen stories set firm expectations about every detail. The later books also have an important shared-authorship history. J. A. Lawrence, Blish's wife, contributed to the adaptation work and completed material after his declining health made it difficult for him to continue. She received credit on Star Trek 12, published after his death.

Choose an omnibus collection if you want to sample the format first. These books move quickly and work best as a visit to an earlier, less settled version of the final frontier.
