Scorpion Shards

Series background & context

The Star Shards Chronicles blends cosmic science fiction with intimate character drama. The trilogy centers on six teenagers who discover that, at the moment of their conception, a distant star went supernova. Pieces of that shattered star’s soul embedded themselves in the unborn children, leaving each of them with a terrifying, supernatural gift.

In Scorpion Shards, we meet Dillon, Deanna, and others who feel fundamentally wrong inside. Dillon is haunted by a compulsive urge to destroy things, from delicate objects to entire buildings. Deanna lives in constant, overwhelming fear that seems to draw danger to her. Each teen believes they are uniquely cursed until visions and strange coincidences bring them together.

As they finally meet, the group realizes their afflictions are connected. The more they understand their shared origin, the clearer it becomes that their powers are tied to a predatory entity called the Bringer, which feeds on destruction and despair. The first book follows their uneasy alliance as they learn to survive their abilities and glimpse the larger threat beyond Earth.

Thief of Souls finds the Star Shards scattered and more powerful than ever. Some have tried to build ordinary lives; others have given in to the rush of using their abilities. The Bringer seizes this chance to manipulate them, stoking conflict and pushing them toward acts that will feed it. The teens have to decide whether they are victims of the star, extensions of the Bringer, or something else entirely.

By Shattered Sky, the stakes have grown beyond individual sanity. The Star Shards are effectively demigods, and their personal choices have global consequences. The Bringer’s true nature is revealed as something that exists between worlds, thriving on suffering. The final volume takes the characters into surreal landscapes and moral corners, forcing them to confront what they owe to each other and to a planet that never asked for them.

Throughout the trilogy, Shusterman keeps a strong focus on character. Each teen grapples with isolation, shame, and the fear of hurting the people they care about. Their powers feel as much like illnesses as advantages. The books ask whether they can turn something born from catastrophe into a force for repair, or whether some damage runs too deep.

Readers who enjoy stories about found families, dark powers, and questions of destiny will find a lot to explore here. The Star Shards Chronicles is less about flashy heroics and more about the messy work of claiming responsibility for power that was never requested.
