Stanley Waters Books in Order

The Stanley Waters books have a gently comic setup that fits Bill Crider well. Stanley is a retired weatherman who has traded public life for a bed-and-breakfast in tiny Higgins, Virginia. Naturally, retirement does not stay quiet. Small-town events, local resentments, and murder have a way of blowing straight into his new life.

That weather background is more than decoration.

Stanley is used to dealing with people, patterns, and the difference between surface appearances and what is really moving in. That makes him a believable amateur investigator. He is curious without being reckless, and he has enough local involvement to keep stumbling into situations he probably ought to leave alone. In Murder Under Blue Skies and Murder in the Mist, the cases grow out of community life rather than spectacular crime, which is exactly what these books need.

The Virginia setting gives the series a cozy frame. You get town events, neighborly friction, and the sense that everyone already knows part of everyone else's business. But the books do not coast on charm alone. In Murder in the Mist, for example, a Civil War reenactment turns from playacting to real violence, which is a good example of how the series likes to pivot from local color to genuine stakes.

These are inviting mysteries, but not empty ones. Stanley's appeal comes from his ordinary competence. He is not reinventing himself as a master detective. He is simply too observant, too involved, and too stubborn to ignore what is in front of him.

If you want a short, easy-to-read cozy series with a strong sense of place and a likable amateur sleuth, start with Murder Under Blue Skies and continue to Murder in the Mist. There are only two books, which makes the whole series feel like a neat little weather system, quick to form, enjoyable while it lasts, and over before it can wear out its welcome.
